Interview #2 Owner of Fencing Business

Today I’m interviewing Andrew Jones of Horsham Fence Contractors about how he plans to grow his business using online methods.  We had planned to do a video interview, but unfortunately technology let us down, so we’ve resorted to the old-fashioned method of writing!

Andrew has been running his business for about 3 years and is a very proficient fencer. He’s been a popular member of several off-line networking groups for a couple of years and has found that word-of-mouth has been a great help in getting his fencing business going.

But now it’s time to expand and Andrew feels that he needs to advertise his services in order to attain the next level. He has one team fully occupied but would like to add another team and a second vehicle, with all the risk and additional investment that entails. In order to ensure that he keeps all his staff busy, Andrew is planning to promote his business.

After looking at all the alternatives, Horsham Fence Contractors have decided that the best method of promotion is the internet. There is scope to advertise in local magazines and papers, but the results are uncertain and not easy to measure. It’s felt that small village mags may bring the best returns, but although they are fairly cheap, it’s surprising how much they add up when each one has a monthly cost.

So Andrew has started his online campaign by commissioning a website and doing some Google Ads. Although the ads are hit and miss at the moment, it’s felt that they could bring in business and keep him going until the website starts to rank on the search engines.

Andrew has employed a local web designer and SEO expert to help in his efforts. He spent about £1,000 on the website itself (click on the link at the top of the page) and now he’s investing in ongoing SEO.  That in itself is a risk because it’s an inexact science and one has to have faith in the person you employ. Having done a lot of research, this business owner is confident that his expert has the skills to ensure he dgets some results.

But it’s not a fast process. SEO takes time and it’s only been 2 months since the site was first launched. It takes patience to see results and that’s something that not everyone is prepared to understand. However, the website is slowly being recognised since it was well written and adds something to the world wide web. The web designer is Tim, who tells Andrew that the key to having a well-ranked website is to give value. That means the site should be very well written (not by a non-English speaker hired from a dodgy website) and it should contain a lot of useful and relevant information.

This is why Andrew was prepared to spend a lot of money and be patient!  He is following the daily progress of the website and is confident that by doing the right things his site will gradually rise in the rankings of all the major search engines. When that happens, he should start to get business directly from the website.

Although SEO is pricey, it will mean that the company can stop all other forms of advertising and settle down to a monthly retainer.

That’s the plan. And along with the SEO goes a social media campaign that sees the company regularly posting on Facebook and other platforms to keep their profile in front of their potential customers. They have learned how to use Facebook ads to promote themselves too and by combining all these facets of their campaign, they reckon they have a bright future.

I hope so too because Andrew and his team have worked hard on their fencing business and now are putting a lot of effort into their marketing.

Good luck Horsham Fence Contractors!

How to Boost your Online Presence

I thought it would be a good idea to do a case study today to show how you can boost your business by doing a few basic things online.

The company we’re choosing is Haywards Heath Carpet Cleaners. They have a good website, part of Horsham Carpet Cleaners, which you can check it out by clicking on the link above.

But there’s far more to getting your name out there. Having a website by itself is like having a pile of business cards in your pocket. No-one sees it unless you get it out there!

So the first thing to do when you launch a business and get your website is to have someone do citations for you. Citations are simply listings of your business in directories. There are hundreds of these, mostly free, and it’s simply a case of going through and listing your company name, address and phone number, together with your website address and a few other details. This says to the search engines that your business is real.

In the search engine world, Google is the 100lb gorilla!  They rule the world, although the other search engines do have some influence too. So it’s best to keep Google happy and they like you to be real.  Doing citations is very tedious so I recommend you pay someone a couple of hundred pounds to work through them on your behalf.

As well as citations, you need a Facebook page, which is simplicity itself to set up if you are already on Facebook. Simply add a business page and add your details. Then you can post a couple of times a week and engage with your potential customers.  You can see the Facebook page for the carpet cleaners at facebook.com/alphahorshamcarpetcleaners

The reason it’s called “Alpha Horsham Carpet Cleaners” is because there was already a company called Horsham Carpet Cleaners, although this is now defunct. Sometimes one has to be inventive.

After Facebook, there are other social sites you can set up, such as Google My Business, Twitter etc.

You may not be aware of Google My Business but it’s an important one because it gives access to the Maps that show up when you do a search for a local business. You need to get your entry verified by mail. Google sends a postcard with a code that you enter to confirm that you actually trade at that address. As I said, Google wants to know that you’re a genuine business.

We haven’t yet set up a Twitter account for Horsham Carpet Cleaners, but it’s something we may tackle in the future.

As well as online marketing, of course, you also need to do the usual networking round to ensure your business is known in the area. Get to know people, give our your business cards – and ensure they have your website prominently featured. Everyone goes straight online to look at your “brochure” so it’s important that it really showcases your business and doesn’t let you down.

Next time we’ll continue the case study by having a look at how the website is put together and the information it contains.

Interview #1: Retail Clothing Store Owner

Hi, it’s Jessy

Due to the blog being new, I haven’t managed to arrange an interview early enough yet… Business owners are busy and work hard!

So, I have found a great interview perfect to start with.

This is a retail clothing store business owner called Kamal Chohan. Watch the video below before I start to explain the major factors he talks about in this interview.

I’m going to literally fire out everything important, because I think Kamal has some great perceptions on business and you should follow them too.

The number 1 thing he points out is that you need to know your simple economics – This is supply and demand. I know I learn this and other members of the team follow this too. You cannot go into a market without knowing what your customers want, so you need to do the research.

Even with clothing, what do you think affects the demand for Kamal’s situation? Well, firstly he lives in california, so it’s probably going to be hot. So why would you supply thick warm clothes? Got it?

I’ve also got another real time example relating to the internet. Take this from one of Ben’s businesses. He owns a phone repair store in a local town in England. What you can see on the website is that he has numerous pages that cater for many services he has. Not all of them are there, but a lot are. This is to target the people who search for them services online and he knows this because he has done his research of the demand.

Kamal says he is still learning his customers demand so it’s nothing you can get around quickly. It takes patience and research, and you will grow. Continue reading “Interview #1: Retail Clothing Store Owner”

5 Do’s And Don’ts Advice For Your Twitter Business Page

One of the many starting places for online businesses is social media. The major social media platforms for businesses are Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, but not all of you use them correctly.

For now, let’s stick to Twitter. Your Twitter business account debatebly caters for your biggest online representation of your business. For people like me who have been marketing online for years, I can see easily who is doing it right and who isn’t. Trust and interest by your consumers by showing your social media presence correctly is gained by using such platforms.

Some of the most simplest things can make your social media presence stronger… and here are just 10 of my most common guidelines I have followed.

5 Do’s And Don’ts Advice For Your Twitter Business Page…

  1. Twitter Visual Representation

First things first, you need to make an effort in how your twitter page looks. If you already have a strong business profile, then use that. What you need to make sure is that you use the profile image and header image well. Usually, the best idea is to use your company logo as your profile image, but the header image requires a little more thought. With your header image, you need to communicate a powerful message about the business. Relating to Ben’s descriptions, you need to connect to your audience and the header image is the perfect place to do that.

What you don’t want to do is rush your Twitter imagery and get the colour co-ordination completely wrong. By not even uploading a profile image and header you should receive a slap for as you will get nowhere with it. So, make sure that you get it reasonably appealing and consider hiring a designer if needed if you run out of ideas. I struggled with design and always preferred with marketing side of things. Take some time to consider some design principles which professionals adhere by.

2.  Consistency

One of the most obvious things about social media is that you need to be consistent with it. You can’t just share your own post once and retweet a post every now and then. Your customers are going to get bored… Fast! So, this is incredibly important or your social media campaign will fail. If you start to struggle because you have ran out of ideas on what to post, then read on.

What you don’t want to do, and I will explain in more detail in point 5 is that you don’t write up a quick tweet and send it because you are short on time. This will lead to decline and will be generally boring for possible consumers. There are millions of ideas on the internet and I can share a fellow business’ website which you need to respect for the time taken to produce incredible content surrounding window tinting. The company’s business skyrocketed for being consistent with their online campaign. – “Results don’t come easy”.  But if you are out of ideas, this is one article I followed and it sparked some light bulbs for my Twitter campaigns: Content Ideas.

Character: The Biggest Front To All Entrepreneurs

I know what you’re thinking… This is meant to be an inspiration post! But in my eyes, inspiration gives you motivation and motivation shows a good character.

Simply achieving goals can be easy, but what if you want to crush them goals and become something much better. Create a lifestyle that you have dreamt of since a child. Then it takes a lot more thought and my advice is to have a foundation on your character.

Your character – similar to mindset – will be your weapon. If you encounter a situation with a doubt in your mind, then you are going to fail with that doubt dragging you down.

Let’s scrape away the negative. A typical character will find excuses. A typical character will blame others. A typical character will be lazy. A typical character will show no enthusiasm when it comes to working with your fellow employees.

Relating to my previous post, do you think that Frank Cardone was any of these negatives when dealing with situations relating to is business life? No, so this is all you need to build that foundation for a strong business lifestyle.

Its definitely normal to take risks and know that failure can happen… Its life. But battling this with the right character is definitely going to give you a massive chance of succeeding. What do successful people do when they have doubts? They work even harder so that they make sure they do not fail.

If you was given the world’s best business that has the best staff, best ideas and plenty of resources, you could still ruin it by not pushing for it.

My words of advice… Continue reading “Character: The Biggest Front To All Entrepreneurs”
